Widows full movie directed by Steve McQueen is based on a British television series of the same name written by Lynda La Plante.
Steve McQueen adapted his background to Chicago. Widows present what has not been shown much in the film, women as the main actors from various races, including the colored race in this film represented by the artist Viola Davis.
Widows told about efforts to uncover the causes of the deaths of the husbands of 3 widows who had not previously known each other. The film will present the stories of several women: Veronica, Linda, and Alice. Veronica (played by Viola Davis) is an African-American woman who lives in luxury with her husband, Harry, played by Liam Neeson. Linda (Michelle Rodriguez) is a Latin woman who runs a clothing store business.
Meanwhile, Alice (Elizabeth Debicki) is a beautiful but fragile Polish woman. He lives on the assumption that women will not be able to be independent, under the mother’s parenting, which makes him feel helpless, as well as the harsh treatment of his beloved husband. A bitter incident happened to them when the husbands who were a gang of criminals were caught red-handed by the police while in action.
At the same time, the political situation in Chicago was also hot amid competition between Jack Mulligan (Colin Farrell) and Jamal Manning (Brian Tyree Henry) becoming a member of the city council. Jack plunged into politics simply because several generations of his family did the same thing, while Jamal wanted Jack to have the life he had, something he could not get as an African-American man there.
Political battles require a lot of money. Bad for Jamal, his money was robbed by Harry’s gang. Veronica, who is still in mourning, has to deal with Jamal who collects money stolen by her husband. Flogged with terror from Jamal and his younger brother who did not hesitate to do things brutal, Jatemme (Daniel Kaluuya), Veronica racked her brain to save herself from the threat.
Armed with a legacy from Harry in the form of a complete notebook containing the next robbery plan, Veronica recruits Linda and Alice, whose lives are also turned upside down. Assisted by Belle (Cynthia Erivo), a tough woman who is willing to be recruited to support her daughter, they try to realize this complicated plan. Tensions crept through the film that also flicked the issue of racism in the United States.
For example, the curiosity of people who are curious about how Veronica, an African-American woman, married Harry who was white, where their families belong to the upper-middle class. Veronica-Harry’s married life was also filled with sadness due to racism that claimed the important things in their lives. The audience was invited to feel the tension while the four characters form strategies without knowing there are surprises that await them.
There are some pretty sad scenes, especially those involving Jatemme who are cold-blooded and willing to do anything for Jamal’s success. Each character develops into more empowered women throughout their journey from widows to criminals, solely for the sake of survival and improving the chaotic lives of the late husbands.
